About
Avid vocal composer, Matthew Recio collaborates with poets, writers and artists across the globe to bring text to life in the concert hall and on the theatrical stage. He recently finished his post as Vanguard emerging opera composer with Chicago Opera Theatre where he wrote his one act, "The Puppy Episode" with esteemed librettist, Royce Vavrek winning him the American Prize Award for Opera. “The Puppy Episode” was premiered in March of 2021 through the Chicago Opera Theater and was co-produced by Opera Columbus and Oberlin Conservatory for the staged premiere.
"For me, writing is a direct reflection of what I observe in society & the world."

Matthew has worked with many Chicago based ensembles, including his work with Chicago Fringe Opera for both their City of Works project as well as being a featured composer for their DeCameron Opera Coalition DOC the Halls CD project. Passionate about raising marginalized voices, he was proud to have been a resident composer with the LYNX project's Amplify Series, where he collaborated with poet, John-Carlos Schaut to lift nonverbal autistic voices in the art song sphere. His collaborative work for the series, My Still Lips was also featured on Chicago's Rush Hour Concert Series. Other song projects include his work for the Fourth Coast Ensemble's WordSong Commissioning series, an ensemble where he was also a featured winner of the Chicago SongSlam series for How We Hush. Matthew had his Ravinia debut with his commissioned work, Might be Equal for Ryan Townsend Strand's vocal album, "Letters to Jackie" which was produced by Sono Luminus records. He looks forward to his return to Ravinia this summer where he will have his vocal works presented by soprano, Rachel Blaustein as a part of the Steans Institute. This coming year he will have his vocal works presented by the Collaborative Arts institute of Chicago featuring soprano, Vanessa Becerra. His cantata, The Hollow will also be remounted in Montana this summer with the talented Roots in the Sky choir. Matthew has received his Symphony Hall debut with David Sand's PlayOut! project for his work, Fata Morgana featuring the poetry of Alejandra Villareal Martinez. Matthew recently received his WFMT Chicago premiere for his work, Every Lovely Shining Thing, commissioned by grammy nominated soprano Laura Strickling for her 40@40 project. This was a collaborative project with text by Chicago's own, Jerre Dye. He has collaborated with Chicago based choir Stare at the Sun on multiple projects, including an immersive choral cantata, The Hollow, that explores themes of isolation, depression, emergence and renewal with libretti by Alejandra Villareal Martinez. His other multi-movement choral work Holdfast featuring the powerful poetry of Robin Beth Schaer was commissioned by the ensemble as well. Stare at the Sun will be featuring his work this year at the Ear Taxi Festival. Matthew was a proud resident artist with the West Edge Opera Aperture Program. and a featured composer with New Camerata Opera. He has collaborated on a unique project by Queer In(n) to create a vocal work inspired by the life of trans Chicago icon Mama Gloria who passed shortly after the premiere of this work. This featured an adaptive libretto by Dr. Marquese Carter that included an interview with the Chicago activist and icon.
He was selected as the first commissioned composer for Samuel Martin's organization, CincinnatiSong Initiative and is excited for the artistic director's upcoming independent album by BCM+D records with mezzo-soprano, Kathryn Leemhuis that will feature his song cycle Tales of Imagination. He is a published artist under the Dale Warland Series under G.Schirmer/Hal Leonard. As the 2018 Georgina Joshi vocal prize commission winner, Recio received a premiere of his work “In the Desert” for mezzo-soprano and sinfonietta with the Indiana University New Music Ensemble. Recio was named the 2017 American Prize winner in choral composition and was a featured composer with Beth Morrison Projects as an operatic composer at the National Sawdust theatre in Brooklyn, New York.
Recio is a humble winner of the Cincinnati Camerata Competition, New Voices Opera Competition, two-time winner of the NOTUS Composition Competition, finalist in the Young New Yorker’s Choral Competition, and a finalist in the Morton Gould Awards and BMI Awards. With equal passion for instrumental composition, Recio has been represented at the Midwest Composer Symposium, the UNK Music Festival and the Hammer and Nail Dance collaboration. His chamber works received recognition at the IMTA young artist composition competition and the Quartet Nouveau Competition. Recio is a proud alumnus of the IMANI Festival, the Atlantic Music Festival, Valencia International Performing Arts Program, Norfolk Chamber Series and Donald Nally’s Grammy award winning choir, “The Crossing”.
